The “Old
Town” is
the original fishing village of Leigh-on-Sea steeped
in a wealth of history
and legends of bygone days.
Leigh has a long history as a settlement dependent
on the sea, and despite many changes, still has some
of the atmosphere and character of the old, seafaring
community. There are three troupes of Sea Scouts based
down there and they come together to organize the hugely
successful annual Leigh Regatta, which raises funds
for themselves and a nominated charity. Sailing is
a very dominant theme with Leigh Sailing Club based
there and Essex Yacht Club just along the towpath. No
trip to the Old Town is complete without a visit
to the famed "Cockle Sheds" with a bewildering
and mouth-watering array of fresh seafood. These
have evolved from a long history of trawling
for shellfish,
and they still cook the cockles in the sheds. This area with all its charm and character has proved
a popular subject for artists and photographers alike,
and there are some fabulous compositions for sale at
the Lyn Tait Gallery and other studios.
Not only is it seeped in history, artistic charm
and character, it is a wonderful place to enjoy a gastronomic
feast or a quiet pint or glass of wine with a prawn
roll. The restaurants are first class, the cafes quaint
and the pubs vibrant.
