THE MUSTANGS

If you were a teenager living in or around Leigh in the early to mid 1960s there’s a good chance that you went to dances where the Mustangs were playing - Essex Yacht Club, The Elms, The Grand Hotel, Leigh Youth Centre, Leigh Sailing Club and St. Clements Hall, to name just a few of the popular venues from this time. If you’re better at remembering faces than places, the line-up of the band, pictured in 1964, was (from left to right) Roger Dupuy, who’d recently taken over from Bob Church (rhythm guitar), Keith Chesher (drums), Phil Thomas (lead vocals), Adrian Philpott (lead guitar) and Mick Read (bass).
Anyone bold enough to venture as far as Southend (remember, this was before most young people had access to cars) may also have danced to the Mustangs at Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, The Cliffs Pavilion, The Castle, The Halfway House, The Kursaal and, on one memorable occasion at a "Battle of the Bands" held at the Cliffs Bandstage on 5th June 1964 during Southend‘s Golden Jubilee celebrations - attended by over 1,000 teenagers and heard as far away as Cuckoo Corner!
2002 saw the 40th Anniversary of the Mustangs’ formation and plans are in hand to try to stage a one-off playing reunion - something that will require a lot of organisation, as three of the original band live abroad (in Australia and the USA), and even more practice. After all, the founder members of the Mustangs haven’t played together for nearly forty years and holding off the advancing years, creaking backs and stiffening fingers is becoming more and more of a challenge to them!
For a start, the Mustangs have set up their own strictly tongue-in-cheek
Mustangs Memorabilia Web Site (if you want to be entertained, click on www.magus-inter.net/mustangs). This site will also be used, in due course, to give you updates on our progress with the reunion. Anyone with memories or, better still, photos or other memorabilia of the Mustangs from the 1960s please either phone or email Phil Thomas (01268-775096 or phillthom@aol.com) or email Keith Chesher (Keith@micromagus.co.uk). They look forward to hearing from you and, as they say, keep watching this space!![]()

If you still enjoy the Sounds of the Sixties, watch out for
FULL CIRCLE, a popular Rayleigh-based 60s tribute band formed in 1995, who play solely to raise money for charity. The band includes Matt Baker (lead), Anthony Morris (drums), Bill Roberts (rhythm) and both Mick Read (bass) and Phil Thomas (vocals) from the Mustangs - still rocking after all these years!

In 2000, Full Circle, who give away 90% of their gig fees, donated over £3,100 to charity, including such local causes as the Bar ‘n’ Bus, Bosom Pals, Castle Point Friends of Crossroads, Castle Point & District Phoenix Club and Rayleigh’s youth and community charity, The Warehouse Centre.
Work and family commitments permit Full Circle to play only 8 or 9 gigs a year so, if you’re interested in booking us for a fundraising event, family or retirement party, wedding or some other special occasion or if you just want to find out more about our fundraising activities and how we may be able to help your charity or worthy cause raise funds,
phone Phil Thomas on 01268-775096 or email him on phillthom@aol.com as soon as possible. For anyone who lived through this exciting and momentous era, nothing will replace the Music of the Sixties so, to experience an instant trip of authentic 1960s nostalgia played with enthusiasm and flair, give us a call!![]()
For the past four decades music has been one of the UK's major revenue earners for the British economy and continues to be so mainly as a result of major international success achieved by British bands and performers.
So who are these people who obtain such mega worldwide success? And where do they come from? Well in reality they are just mere mortals who maybe once worked in factory or shop or drove a delivery van and lived in either an inner city area or in a small town like Leigh-on-Sea or Southend.
Bands are usually initially formed between likeminded individuals either at school, college, university or in the workplace and this can herald the beginning of potentially long-term careers in addition to huge financial rewards.
Success is achievable within the music and entertainment industry through hard work, determination, ability, resilience, persistence, ambition and patience. Treating the business as a business and not a game, a little talent thrown in for good measure will also be an asset and the final ingredient is a lot of luck.
There are some really fantastic bands in our location and this part of the Leigh-on-Sea.com web site is dedicated to offer our local bands the opportunity to make themselves known not only to our local community but also much further afield by way of your own profile in this section. Your information could be accessed by agents, promoters or even record companies and the Leigh-on-Sea.com web address can be featured in any mailshots you may send out from time to time.
Should you wish to include in this section a profile on your band, or a band you know or follow, then either e-mail or post a photograph and biography plus any other information you wish to highlight and we will set up your profile as soon as we can.
Please note, this is your community web site so please contact us with any suggestions. We will be continually developing this site for the benefit of our local bands and you can help us with that process.
