Witches' Prayer

An evening of storytelling through words and music, dedicated to witch trials; from Essex to Salem.&nbs
In a unique fundraiser for the Leigh Folk Festival, this event brings together music and literature to commemorate those whose lives were lost due to ignorance, superstition and economic cleansing during 16th and 17th century witch trials both in Essex and beyond.

Music comes from Darren Hayman, formerly of Hefner, a singer-songwriter and guitarist playing songs from his 20-song double LP The Violence, chronicling the 17th century Essex witch trials. In 2009, Hayman released the first part of his ‘Essex Trilogy’, Pram Town. The second instalment came in the shape of Essex Arms in 2010. The Violence is the third and final part of the Essex Trilogy.
“Understated and thoughtful, 'The Violence' is a true folk record that should rightfully see Hayman recognised as the national treasure that he clearly is” - The Guardian
Storytelling and words come from Leigh-on-Sea based author Syd Moore, who has published two books, The Drowning Pool and Witch Hunt, which delve into the dark past of the 16th century Essex witch hunts. She is also co-creator of Super Strumps, the game that reclaims female stereotypes through the medium of Top Trumps, and was founding editor of Level 4, an arts and culture magazine.
Musical support also comes from talented musician and singer Jason Steel, who will be performing specially-composed songs based on Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and Leigh-on-Sea band Greanvine, featuring ex-members of The Owl Service, who mix together electric guitar and traditional folk interpretations.
The event takes place in the gothic setting of East 15 Acting School, a converted church, on Friday 19 April, from 7pm onwards.
Tickets are available to buy online from www.leighfolkfestival.com in advance for £8, or £10 on the door.
