February Slipper Swap project aims to reduce trips and falls

February 8, 2024

Older and frail residents living in Southend are being invited to exchange their worn-out slippers to help prevent trips and falls.

This follows a successful campaign in November 2023 which saw over 300 residents attend events at libraries across the city to swap their old slippers for a free brand-new pair. In total, 342 pairs of slippers were swapped.

The new slippers have design features to help prevent falls, such as secure fastenings and robust soles. Where necessary, residents will also be linked to other sources of support which could be beneficial.

Many older and frail people are keen to stay independent at home, however walking indoors in worn-out slippers, barefoot or in socks can increase the risk of falls, slips and trips. This may result in spending time in hospital or receiving treatment at home which can make them feel less independent and more socially isolated.

Councillor James Moyies, cabinet member for public health and social care, said: "I am delighted that we can once again offer this service in February, following the success of our November campaign which saw over 300 residents swap their old slippers for new and safer ones.

“It is crucial for the health and safety of our older and frail residents. One of the factors linked to the prevention of falls is wearing a good pair of slippers. Old slippers can lead to trips and falls, potentially resulting in hospitalisation, loss of independence, and confidence.

“We have set up two more accessible slipper swap events so that residents at risk of a fall can bin their old slippers and pick up a brand-new pair of anti-slip ones for free as well as find out about ways to stay safe and well."

Slipper Swap events will take place in February 2024 at the following venues:

Tuesday 13 February 11am to 1pm
St Lukes Community Hub - 1 Cluny Square, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 4AF

Wednesday 28 February 10am to 12pm
Centre Point Family Centre - Prospect Close, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 6XY

No booking needed. Come along and have a chat with our friendly team for advice and information about how to stay steady on your feet.

The Slipper Swap project is being delivered in partnership with Southend on-Sea City Council’s community engagement team and local groups and organisations.
