Council praises impressive set of GCSE results
An impressive set of GCSE results from GCSE students and schools across the Borough is being praised by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
This summer is the third year that reformed GCSEs graded 9 to 1 have been awarded. This year over 99% of GCSE entries in England were for reformed GCSEs.
Provisional results indicate that 73% of students in Southend achieved grade 4 or above in English and maths combined, a further 1.5% improvement on 2018 results. Grade 4 is the threshold considered to be a ‘standard pass’ by the Department for Education and the bottom of this grade aligns with the bottom of the previous C grade.
Provisional data from Southend schools suggests 56.5% of Southend students achieved a grade 5 in English and maths, which is considered a ‘strong pass’ by the Department for Education. This is above the 2018 figure of 55.3%.
Cecil Jones Academy, Southchurch High School and Chase Academy showed the biggest improvements, with their results increasing by over 8 percentage points compared to 2018 in this more demanding measure.
Cllr Anne Jones, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “I’d like to congratulate all GCSE pupils in Southend for this excellent set of results. Once again, you should be rightly proud of what you have achieved. Maths and English are so important for employment, training and further studies, so it is extremely encouraging to see schools in Southend continuing to improve and be above the national average.
“There is still work to do and we will always aim ever higher. Through our education board, we will continue to support and challenge schools to ensure that every child in Southend has the opportunity of a good education.”
