Deadline nears for 11 plus registration
Year 5 pupils from within the borough of Southend-on-Sea are being urged to consider registering for the 11 plus, if they feel one of Southend’s four grammar schools could be the right choice for their academic future.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has run a campaign for the second year running, to encourage more children from within Southend to register for the 11 plus. Last year’s campaign was hailed a great success and saw 200 more local pupils sit the exam than in 2016. It is hoped that in 2019/20, even more of the available places at Southend’s grammar schools will be filled by pupils from within the borough.
Registering can be done online, fuss-free. The 11 plus exam consists of two tests, an English and a maths paper. There are practice questions online at www.southend11plus.uk, that will give you and your child an idea of the types of questions that will be included. There will be open days, and help available in the summer holidays for those who have questions about the test itself, or grammar school life.
Councillor Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children and learning said: “The 11 plus test is aimed at those children performing in the top 25% in Year 5. If you are considering taking the test, we would like to encourage you to register and see what you can achieve. Taking and passing the test does not mean you have to go to a grammar school, but it does give you the choice. If you don’t take the test, that choice is removed.
“The deadline to register is 20th July 2018, so please do head to our website now, where you will find full information on how to register as well as dates for summer sessions where you can visit the schools, along with a variety of other articles, news and information for parents and pupils. If you would like to attend one of the summer maths sessions, then please head to the southend11plus.uk website where we’ve put all the details. For those pupils in the borough who have already registered – here’s a big ‘Good Luck’ from me.”
