How to Bring Biophilic Design into your home by Zoë from Beautiful Healthy Home Interior Design

August 21, 2025

Hi, I am Zoë from Beautiful Healthy Home, your local interior design studio that puts health at the heart of design.

This month’s blog explores Biophilic Design and why bringing the outdoors inside, is vital for our wellbeing.

Biophilic design seeks to create a home that improves our overall health by connecting us to nature. This important and blossoming design movement integrates natural elements into everyday home environments, from maximising natural light to incorporating materials that mimic nature. It also focuses on sustainable elements, ensuring we are looking after both the planet and ourselves in the design selection process.

“Biophilic design is not just a trend, it is a critical strategy.” Vanessa Champion, editor of the Journal of Biophilic Design.

Think about your home and how you function within it. Do you predominantly use it to relax, bond with family members, entertain or perhaps even work? Which areas need natural light? Daylight increases our attention span so consider full-spectrum lighting that mimics daylight for task-related areas, if you’re low on the real thing.

Do you have a quiet zone/sanctuary in which you can retreat? Bringing in textures like wood, linen and wool whilst focusing on softer, curved lines across your furniture helps create a more relaxed feeling.

Even small adjustments, like adding an air purifying plant (try the parlour palm or peace lily) can evoke feelings of calm, nature and wellbeing.

Or if you prefer something equally beautiful but won’t need watering - try botanical wallpaper - you can go bold and retro with a quirky stylised botanical print from Miss Print - I love their Halo flower, plus all their paper is from sustainably managed forests . Or perhaps you’d prefer a more structured look - I’d opt for Paint & Paper’s Hardy Palm wallpaper which is printed with water-based inks.

Green signifies life and vitality as well as a deep sense of peace. It is rooted in our connection with the natural world and our brains automatically connect it to lush grass, trees and forests. When you start layering these natural influences into your home, you’ll notice how quickly they shift the atmosphere. A simple change, like placing your desk near a window or using natural fabrics for your curtains, can transform how a space feels and functions.

Biophilic design isn’t about sweeping, expensive renovations; it’s about conscious choices that gently remind us of the outdoors. Over time, these decisions create a home that not only looks beautiful but genuinely supports wellbeing. After all, our surroundings shape how we feel every day – so why not let them nurture, restore and inspire us?

My approach to interior design is about balance – blending style with mindfulness. Together, we’ll select materials and products that prioritise comfort, aesthetics, and a healthier home environment, ensuring your space is one you can enjoy for years to come.
