Leigh-on-Sea fishmongers to reopen within next few months

January 23, 2020 by Emily Mertens

Reports have confirmed that Leigh-on-Sea's popular Fisherman's Co-operative will be returning after it was engulfed by an arson attack in September.

Hopefully open in time for the summer, residents will be thrilled with the news that the fishing co-op will be getting rebuilt, boosting the local marine industry once again.

Since the fire broke out back in September, the building along the High Street in Old Leigh has been left untouched with future plans unknown until now.

The Echo revealed that Peter Wexham, Lib Dem councillor for Leigh, confirmed the new plans for the building and how he hopes it will be open in a few months time: "The building has insurance and the council is drawing up plans to rebuild it. Hopefully it will be in this year’s budget. The council will pay for it initially and recoup the cost from the insurance company.

“We have planned for this summer and expect to rebuild it entirely. Architects’ drawings are being done now."
