Local Alumnus Michael Johnson Named Trader of the Year 2025

November 17, 2025

Former West Leigh and Belfairs student Michael Johnson has been named Trader of the Year 2025 at the prestigious Leaders in Trading Awards, held at The Savoy Hotel in London earlier this month.

Over 300 leading figures from across the global trading industry gathered for the annual event, which celebrates excellence and innovation in financial markets. Michael, who currently serves as Head of Equity Trading EMEA at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, received the top honour in recognition of his outstanding performance, leadership, and commitment to best practices within the sector.

A former pupil of West Leigh Infant and Junior Schools and Belfairs Senior School, Michael began his career in finance in 1999, joining London-based asset management firm Foreign & Colonial shortly after leaving education. His career trajectory has been marked by steady progression and achievement, culminating in his promotion to Head of the Equity Trading Desk at Columbia Threadneedle in April 2024.

The Trader of the Year award is widely regarded as one of the industry’s most prestigious accolades. Recipients are judged on several key criteria, including financial performance, risk management, innovation, and professionalism.

Michael commented on the award “ I’d like to say thank you for my nomination, thanks to Columbia Threadneedle Investments for the recognition and most importantly thanks to the people who voted for me, I’m genuinely grateful. Onwards and upwards, we’ll be back for the Team Award in 2026”. In a statement, Columbia Threadneedle Investments congratulated Michael on his achievement:

“Michael’s success highlights his leadership within our robust and global trading capability, which helps us drive the best outcomes for our clients.” This latest recognition marks a career milestone for Michael, whose two decades in the industry reflect a blend of technical expertise, ethical integrity, and forward-thinking strategy—qualities that have defined his approach to equity trading.
