Looking forward it’s impossible to connect the dots but looking backwards it’s as clear as day

November 1, 2018 by Nathaniel Lee, Affinity Mortgages

At affinity mortgages we take pride in our client-centric focus and how we pull together as a team. It’s safe to say that I’ve never worked in an environment quite like it. Inclusive, fun, dynamic and progressive.

At the heart of this is our belief in great advice and communication - both to our clients and between colleagues - as well as the beauty of shared experiences which help shape us and widen our perspectives. We all have a lens we view the world through shaped by our experiences and tendencies, and I am conscious that I want to widen mine as much as possible.

One of the best parts of my job is hearing about a client’s journey which reminds me that our paths are all roadmaps, to a sometimes unknown destination. To paraphrase Steve Jobs “Looking forward it’s impossible to connect the dots but looking backwards it’s as clear as day”.

It was with this in mind that I decided to participate in Career Ready this academic year; a programme that works with year 10 students at a local senior school. Giving back to the next generation is always a worthwhile pursuit and thinking about all the potential paths laid out in front of these young people I’m excited to share my experiences and see them grow. Not only that but I’m sure they will leave their mark on me too.

So far, we have had one session and my group of three are establishing their dynamic. It’ll be interesting to see how this develops over the next few months and beyond. Through shared experience and communication, I hope to help these students. Not by marching them down the same path I trod but by helping them find their own.
