Metal Launch Quest to Find 125 Clever Essex Folk for 125th Anniversary of Southend Borough Council

June 27, 2017 by Leigh-on-Sea.com

Arts group Metal have won a bid to celebrate the Borough of Southend through finding 125 people who have lived in Essex and who have significantly contributed creatively, scientifically, historically, politically or in any other way to the world today.??The project, known as Clever Essex, was launched 3 years ago by Phill Jupitus at Village Green, and has so far reaped 40 characters including the inventor of the ejector seat and parachute, Everard Calthrop, Chelmsford-based womens rights activist and anti-slavery campaigner, Anne Knight, and champion of surgical antiseptic, Joseph Lister amongst many others!?

Now Metal are trying to find a total of 125 characters who were born in or lived in Essex (with as many coming from Southend as possible) to commemorate every year of being a Borough Council. If you have any suggestions or someone you’d like to nominate, please go to www.cleveressex.co.uk and fill in the quick, online form. The criteria is really simple, nominations must have:

Been born in and/or lived in Essex for a significant amount of time.

Have lived their whole life (ie. have already passed on)

Have done something extra-ordinary, leaving a legacy for a better world, however small or large

In association with BBC Essex, to highlight this project, there will be a Clever Essex stage at this year’s Village Green, celebrating some of the fantastic characters Metal have discovered so far. DJ Rob Jelly will be presenting a jam packed, fun-filled programme of activities, games, performances and talks which will include experiments and demonstrations, a rubber ring relay race, Dalmation Formation, retro aerobics and a classic Southend singalong knees-up!?

Throughout the day, the programme on the Clever Essex stage will include

Invention Hour

Science Hour

Arts and Literature Hour

Sports Hour

Music and Theatre Hour

Clever Round Up!

Come along and bring your nominations with you!
