The new 50mph speed limit on the A127 has been implemented

January 28, 2020 by Emily Mertens

The new 50mph speed limit on the A127 has been put in place starting Tuesday 28th January 2020 and will affect both directions of traffic.

The new speed limit will affect between the Fortune of War roundabout, Laindon, up to the Pound Lane and Cranfield Park Road junctions in the aim of improving air quality in Basildon.

A number of overnight lane and road closures will also be taking place over the next six weeks every night between 9pm and 5am. Essex Highways will announce any closures once they have been decided on their website and Twitter page and diversions will be put in place where necessary.

These closures are being implemented in order to replace signs and speed cameras, adjusting to the new 50 mph limit. These road restrictions will be lifted during the day to avoid any inconvenience.

Stated on the Essex Highways website, Essex County Council said: “By lowering the speed limit it is expected that air quality on this stretch of the A127 can be brought to safe levels by 2021, as well as improving road safety and journey time reliability. Vehicles’ engines work more efficiently at about 50mph and lowering speeds from 70mph to 50mph can reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from car exhausts by up to 20 per cent.”
