New open top bus service from Southend to Leigh

June 20, 2017 by Leigh-on-sea.com on behalf of Leigh Town Council

Go Ahead London is introducing a new open top bus route from Southend to Leigh this Summer.

The bus will be in use from Monday 24th July for a 6 week trial period and numberedroute 68 to match the old Southend Transport numbering for the local seafront route.

Route 68 will start outside Adventure Island (west side of the pier by the Three Shells), and will be heading west along the esplanade past the cafés of Westcliff, and the old shelter in Chalkwell.

Tightly squeezing under the bridge within Chalkwell, it then heads along the Grand Parade to Leigh-On-Sea Station with a stop just prior opposite The Ship pub, allowing customers to access the footbridge to the old high street and Bell Wharf Beach.

Then, after serving Leigh-On-Sea Station, the route circles up the hill to the main part of Leigh; the Post Office and Broadway, to serve the local community there.

The route then heads back down the front all the way to Southend Pier, and then continues to the historic Kursaal where it spins round and comes back to Adventure Island (west side of the pier by the Three Shells) to terminate.

The new open top 68 service runs hourly and will operate on all days of the week from Monday 24th July until Saturday 2nd September.
