On balance

January 30, 2019 by Ray Morgan

Well, January is almost over and well done to all of you that have resisted the temptation to drink booze as part of Dry January.

I had the best intentions to not drink, but one minute it's "just a sherry" and then it's Burns Night and you're drinking Dalwhinnie and then it's the 26th of very-much-still January but it's your friend's 40th birthday party, and there's Old Fashioneds on the cocktail menu, never mind a quick pint at the brilliant new Craftwerk beer bar beforehand...

In short, I caved and went for it. But I'm pleased I still did 3 weeks without booze. It's way easier now with non-alcoholic beers in almost every pub you visit, which is a welcome change from syrupy Coke out of a bendy tap.

It felt good to cut loose on Saturday night and have a big night out. I don't really do that much anymore; when you're saving up to get your sofa reupholstered, and you've rediscovered your love of knitting, and there's all kinds of gems on TV, it's easy to stay in a lot. And I find it very easy to embrace my inner pensioner.

I went to Frinton for the day on Saturday and knitted a scarf the whole way there in the car and the whole way back - in fact when I got home, my version of "pre drinks" before the party was having a cup of tea WHILE still knitting.

But it was nice to get dressed up and go out and drink cocktails and remind myself that I am in fact 34, and while knitting and sherry and BBC craft documentaries are brilliant, it's also good to embrace what youth I have left and dance to NWA and drunk-order pizza from Nino's like I used to ten years ago. This week I'll be back on the Beck's Blues for a bit and eating home made green detox soup... and knitting again. It's alllll about balance.
