Prepared, planned and parked: 11 plus day
With an expected influx of pupils ready to sit this year’s 11 Plus exam, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is supporting residents and schools to minimise disruption to those living locally, and to maintain the flow of traffic through the area.
The 11 plus test will take place on the morning of 22 September, at Southend High School for Girls, Southend High School for Boys, Westcliff High School for Girls and Westcliff High School for Boys, Shoeburyness High School, St Bernard’s High School and St Thomas More High School. The council is playing a supportive role in providing marshals to help residents freely move in and out of their properties and to ensure those parking on local roads are doing so safely and considerately.
There will be parking along the eastern side of Middlesex Avenue in Westcliff, along other local streets, and at many of the schools themselves. In order to prevent inconsiderate parking (for example, across driveways or entrances to private parking areas for flats and houses), the council has agreed to close Suffolk Avenue, Surrey Avenue, Kent Avenue and Norfolk Avenue from 7am – 2pm, to non-residents. Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders have been obtained and advertised in local media, residents have been written to, and street notices will be displayed.
Councillor James Courtenay, deputy leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council said, “We are expecting an influx of vehicles around these schools on the morning of the 11 plus examination, and our planned road closures will help cars move around the areas. They aim to avoid issues around inconsiderate parking across private driveways and in other inappropriate areas.
“I advise pupils to arrive early, to consider public transport options, and if their parents/carers need to park, then to plan their options ahead of time, so they can arrive fresh and ready to give their best. Parking details are at www.southend.gov.uk/11plus.
“I would like to wish everyone, and especially Southend’s pupils, the very best of luck.”
