Tales of North Street School

Leigh has had its fair share of little monsters as the registers for North Street Schools show. In 1889 the teacher wrote:- ‘It should be noted that the following boys were completely ignorant of the merest elements of the 3 Rs when received here. They had been running about the streets for years.

They have had great attention paid to them here however, and 4 of them show signs of developing intellect, the remaining ones seeming unable to emerge from the closet of ignorance in which they have for so long been left.’

The 8 boys were from well known Leigh families. Unfortunately the teacher did not record which of the 8 turned into little Einsteins and which lived the rest of their lives in blissful ignorance.
