Youth accused of killing two friends in accident in Leigh appears in court

A 16 year old boy who is accused of killing his two friends in a tragic car accident in Leigh has appeared at Basildon Crown Court for dangerous driving.

The 16 year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was allegedly driving a Ford Escort, which he purchased the day before, when he crashed into a BMW at the junction of Southsea avenue and Glendale Gardens on December 27th. 

Tragically, passenger Reigan Knight 17, died at the scene and Liam Philips, also 17, later died in hospital. 

In addition to two counts of death by dangerous driving, the youth also faces a charge of driving without insurance and driving without a licence. 

The police are continuing their investigation, whilst the youth has been released on bail on an 8pm to 8am curfew.

A provisional date for a hearing has been set for January 24, but may be brought forward.
