Youth groups give youngsters somewhere to connect
A community centre is giving young people somewhere to socialise with others their age and get advice and guidance.
The St Luke’s Community Hub, based in Cluny Square in Southend, runs after-school clubs, Saturday clubs and evening clubs for children aged eight upwards.
It gives young people a safe place to meet with their friends, play pool, take part in arts and crafts, and outdoor activities when the weather allows. Around 50 young people per week take advantage of the free of charge youth groups that the centre offers.
Janice Lyons, team manager for early help, family support and youth offending service, said: “We often find that the young people who come along, come back with their friends. Our evening group for young people aged 11 plus is becoming more popular. We give them some toast and a hot drink, and are there if they need a chat with someone.”
Cllr Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children and lifelong learning, said: “Being sociable away from school and the learning environment, where young people can interact with their peers without relying on technology, develops their social skills and improves their confidence. I think it’s great that St Luke’s Community Hub can provide a safe place for children and young people to meet with their friends and enjoy being young.”
The sessions are as follows:
Wednesday and Friday; after-school club, 3.30pm to 5pm, for children aged 8 to 11.
Tuesday; 5.30pm to 7.30pm, aged 11 plus.
Saturday morning; ages 8 to 16.
