110,000 handmade poppies to transform Southend Pier

Southend Pier has been overwhelmed by the extraordinary response to its Poppies on the Pier project, with over 110,000 knitted and crocheted poppies arriving from across the UK and around the world.
From 5 to 16 November 2025, the world’s longest pleasure pier will be transformed into a striking sea of red as part of a powerful community tribute for Remembrance Day.
The poppies, created by thousands of individuals, crafting groups, schools and care homes, will line the pier railings and culminate in a dramatic display at the pier head. Each has been lovingly handmade and sent with messages of reflection, thanks and remembrance.
Cllr Matt Dent, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture, Music and Tourism, said: “We honestly can’t believe how many poppies have arrived – it’s just incredible.
"The response has been truly heartwarming, and we’re so grateful to everyone who’s taken the time to create and send one in.
"Each poppy represents love, respect and creativity, and together they’ll form a stunning, emotional tribute on Southend Pier this November.”
The Royal British Legion will also be part of the event throughout the display, raising funds for the annual Poppy Appeal in support of the Armed Forces community.
Laura Gibbs, Regional Poppy Appeal Manager, said: “We are proud to be part of this moving community tribute on Southend Pier. Projects like this show how remembrance continues to unite people of all backgrounds, communities, and generations, as well as honouring those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life.
“We would like to thank the council for providing the opportunity for our fundraisers to collect on the pier. Every donation raises vital funds for the Royal British Legion to support the Armed Forces community for life.”
Led by Southend-on-Sea City Council, Poppies on the Pier not only commemorates those who served but also celebrates community spirit and creativity, transforming a simple act of craft into a breathtaking collective symbol of remembrance and hope.
