Chapter one: apply to become a Summer Reading Challenge volunteer

March 30, 2022

Southend Libraries are once again looking for volunteers to help keep children reading throughout the summer holidays for the Summer Reading Challenge.

We are looking for volunteers aged 14 and above, to help library staff sign children up to the Summer Reading Challenge and talk to children about their books, encouraging them to complete the challenge.

Tandra Forster, executive director for adults and communities, said: “We are asking for volunteers in libraries across the City to help staff deliver the Summer Reading Challenge.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to help their local community by encouraging children to improve their literacy skills. Volunteers gain valuable work experience and get the chance to meet new people and further enhance their own communication skills, and volunteering also looks great on a CV.”

Volunteers should be able to commit to around 48 hours, across the six-week summer holidays from Saturday 23 July to Wednesday 31 August.

Applications are open from Saturday 2 April and will be closing on Sunday 3 July. Application forms can be picked up from your local library, or by request from librarydevelopment@southend.gov.uk
