Council encourages residents to celebrate Coronation Weekend

January 26, 2023

Southend-on-Sea City Council is encouraging residents to start planning their own celebrations for The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

Taking place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May, the historic Coronation Weekend also includes a live concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May and an extra bank holiday on Monday 8 May.

As per the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last June, the council is again encouraging communities to come together and celebrate in their own way through a range of activities, which may include street parties. Residents interested in holding a street party must apply for a road closure to keep everyone safe.

Cllr Stephen George, leader of the council, said: “This is a historic year for the country as we celebrate The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

“We know how positive celebrations like this can be within local communities, as seen with the popularity of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend street parties held across our City last year.

“Like before, we need to ensure these celebrations are carried out safely, which is why we need anyone interested in organising a street party to again send us their application by Friday 24 March. We have lots of useful information available on our website, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.”
