Formal consultation on school admission arrangements starts

Monday 6th November 2017

Formal public consultation on school admission arrangements for community and some Academy and Foundation primary schools from September 2019 onwards has started and will run until 15 December 2017.

Along with proposed changes to admissions criteria, views on changes to some school catchment areas within Leigh are being sought through the formal process.

The final recommended model for Leigh catchment areas, agreed by Cabinet and Own Admission Authorities emerged through the public engagement exercise earlier this year and discussion at the Admissions Forum.

Cllr James Courtenay, Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, says: “This formal consultation process follows the recently completed ‘listening and engagement’ exercise which has helped to inform the proposed changes that are now being put out to public consultation.

“We have listened to the views of parents, the Admissions Forum, schools and affected own admission authorities and have developed what we believe is a fair and balanced approach to admissions and catchment areas that is fit for the future.

“Even if you participated in the ‘listening and engagement’ phase, it is vital that you also give us your views as part of the formal consultation. We want as many local people as possible to have their say, so please access the proposals online and respond before the deadline.”

As part of the formal consultation, the council is hosting an open session on 23 November from 6.30pm -8.30pm in the Civic Centre for people to talk to council representatives for more details.
