Generous residents unable to keep up with demand for Toy Drive support
In just five short weeks more than 1,440 toys have been donated to Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Toy Drive.
But there is more to do.
The elves cannot keep up with the number of orders coming in from charities, support groups and social workers who want to give underprivileged children a chance to open a brand-new gift this festive season.
We need more gifts, especially for babies aged up to two years old and gifts for youngsters aged 10 or older, such as toiletry sets, footballs, board games, vouchers, hair or make-up kits, snuggly blankets, and so on.
Cllr Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children’s services, education and learning, said; “The team have been amazed at the staggering generosity of the people and businesses of Southend so far, but the demand is currently far outstripping the supply.
“I know times are tight this season, but please, if you are out Christmas shopping please pop an extra little something into your basket for a child who otherwise might get nothing. The team make up parcels so even if you cannot donate that much, it will still make a big difference to the child who receives it.”
If you want to get involved, you can donate:
- New toys, suitable for girls, boys and babies up to the age of 17
- Vouchers for toys or days out
- Selection packs
- Pens, pencils and colouring books
- Toiletry sets
If batteries are needed for the toys, please include them
You can purchase gifts directly from Argosy Toys or Toys ‘n’ Tuck in store and council elves will collect the gifts. Or you can purchase gifts from www.argosytoys.co.uk and select ‘Toy Drive’ as an option for delivery.
Or you can deliver your donation directly to the Civic Centre or The Forum by Tuesday 19 December.
