High Tide - a party this Good Friday

March 22, 2018 by Ray Morgan

On Good Friday, Saks Underground in Southend will be turned into a new club night that promises upbeat, camp tunes and an inclusive ethos of "everyone invited".
High Tide is the brainchild of Leigh on Sea-based party-throwers Ben Thompson and Simon Swift, who will be DJing on the night along with Sundown Arts producers Jo Overfield and Ray Morgan.
"We moved from London to Leigh about 10 years ago," says Ben. "Since then we’ve been to some brilliant local nights like Middle Aged Spread, Sundown Arts and Secret Supper Club... we knew a lot of people making the effort to make stuff happen locally and wanted to do something ourselves."
Simon gives a flavour of what party-goers can expect from the night. "We wanted an opportunity to play the sort of music we like to play at parties, heavy on the 80s and 90s pop, TV theme tunes – a lot of Pointer Sisters. And I thought, ‘There’s got to be an audience for that, right?’"
The doors will open to guests at 9pm on Good Friday and the dancing will go on until the early hours, encapsulating that "Bank Holiday weekend" feel.
"It's been really fun making poster and flyers and asking for them to be put in shop windows to advertise it, spending ridiculous amounts of time putting together a set list, which keeps changing hour by hour."
"We'll be playing an upbeat, often quite camp mix of music," Ben chimes in, "from Erasure to Kate Bush, Katy Perry to David Bowie, Europop and disco."
Simon sums up the nature of wanting to put on an event in our local area perfectly: "Ultimately, I love living here and just felt I had to get up off the couch on the weekend and do something."
So put those Easter eggs down, get up off the couch, put on your dancing shoes and head to Saks this Good Friday. It guarantees to put a smile on your face.
