Q & A: Katie Hopkins sued by Jack Monroe

March 21, 2017 by Melinda @ Giles Wilson Solicitors

Question:  I read the case about Jack Monroe (also read Mx Monroe was originally from Leigh on sea!!).  Does this mean that anyone can be sued if they say something rude about someone else on Twitter?

Answer:   Actually being rude is not enough to be sued but if the statement is untrue and causes substantial damage to someone’s reputation then the law applies to anyone.  The Monroe case did not change the law; it just highlighted it because of the interest in it; especially for those of us in Leigh on sea!  However the law does not just apply to Twitter - it applies to any form of social media that publishes untrue comments.  It’s obviously so important to take care but also not to sit back if someone does it to you...
