WHITE WALL SPACE are proud to announce a new partnership with arts organisation Metal Culture. White Wall Space will be curating the gallery space in Metal’s Café Valise that will be occupying a permanent space in the re-vamped Leigh Community Centre. A full programme of great contemporary artworks will be on exhibition at the café gallery with evening events to open each new show.

To launch this new venture White Wall Space will be showing works, never shown in exhibition before, by Leigh-based comedian and TV host PHILL JUPITUS.

Phill, although better known for his stand-up comedy and TV appearances, is a cartoonist of great ability and has received commissions from the Times, the Guardian, the Radio Times and the Beano.  He has had cartoon drawings published from an early age and it was his love of this format that directly led him into comedy performing live as support to the Housemartins, the Style Council, and Billy Bragg amongst others.

In his own words, Phill has this to say about his life with cartoons . . .

“As a child I always loved comics and cartoons. Sadly I wasn't blessed with an artistic eye. But blind enthusiasm will often take you as far as talent, and I started doing cartoon work for fanzines in the 1980s as well as being published in NME and Time Out. This led me to becoming resident illustrator for West Ham fanzine 'Fortunes Always Hiding', as well as doing some art and design for Billy Bragg, The Housemartins and Red Wedge.

On becoming a parent and a full time comedian I didn't have the time to carry on drawing and so thought that would be that.

However, In 2006, I was contacted by QI producer John Lloyd and asked to contribute to a book they were producing. I mentioned that I was a former cartoonist and so for the first time in fifteen years, returned to the drawing board. In recent years my work has appeared in The Times, The Guardian, Radio Times, The Beano and the QI annual.”

“Collected Doodlings – 1983 to 2010”, this exhibition will be at Café Valise, Leigh Community Centre, Elm Road, from November 27th until December 23rd.
