School employee handed suspended sentence for assaulting child and older woman

A Support Staff worker from Hadleigh Infant and Nursery School has pleaded guilty to assaulting a minor and also a further charge for assault.

Emma Squires of Manor Road Benfleet, changed her plea to guilty just days before the trial was due to start at Basildon Magistrates Court. The charges were brought after Squires assaulted a child drinking wine and then assaulted the adult as they tried to intervene.

Squires, who appeared at the same court on July 26, was handed a four-week sentence for assaulting a child and a six-week sentence for assaulting the adult, both to run concurrently and suspended for 12 months.

The court heard heard how Squires had taken steps to address her problems with alcohol and this was taken into account when determining the appropriate sentence.

Squires has been ordered to pay a total of £215 in victim compensation, attend 30 days worth of rehabilitation activities and 160 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months.
