Southend households to receive kerbside collection update letters

Every Southend-on-Sea household will soon receive important letters outlining upcoming changes to their kerbside recycling and waste collections in the Autumn.
From the week commencing Monday 21 July, through to the week commencing Monday 18 August, Southend-on-Sea City Council will be issuing letters to all households to confirm whether they will continue using sack collections or transition to a wheelie bin system.
The letters are being delivered in phases, based on residents’ usual kerbside collection days. The wheelie bins will be delivered to households from Monday 4 August. This phased approach helps ensure a smooth and efficient rollout across the city.
The letter will explain what changes are being made for each household and provide clear next steps. These changes are part of the Council’s continued efforts to improve recycling and non-recyclable waste services, reduce litter, and keep Southend’s streets clean.
Cllr Lydia Hyde, cabinet member for climate, environment and waste, said: “We’re encouraging residents to keep an eye on their post over the coming weeks. These letters are the first step in helping households prepare for upcoming changes to how we collect household waste.
The move to wheelie bins for some properties aims to make collections cleaner, greener, and more efficient. Other authorities have seen recycling rates increase by over 15% following similar changes. We also recognise that for some households, sacks may remain the best option.
If you haven’t received your letter by Wednesday 27 August, please contact our Customer Services team, who will be happy to assist.”
Residents who have questions or concerns after receiving their letter are encouraged to visit: Recycling and waste collections from mid to late 2025 – Southend-on-Sea City Council for further information.
For copies of the letter in large print or electronic accessible formats please contact our Customer Services team on 01702 215006, or email: newwasteservice@southend.gov.uk
To help residents stay informed about their kerbside collection week, we’ve launched the new ‘Southend Waste App’, available to download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. To find out more visit: Resident recycling and waste bin app – Southend-on-Sea City Council
