Southend to commemorate 80 years since VJ Day

Southend will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Friday 15 August

Two-minute silence at the Civic Centre steps at 12 noon

Service of Commemoration at the Cenotaph from 7.30pm

Southend residents are invited to join commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on Friday 15 August.

VJ Day marks the end of the Second World War in the Pacific, when Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945.

It’s a time to remember the courage of those who served in the Far East and to share their stories with future generations.

Cllr Nigel Folkard, The Mayor of Southend, said: “VJ Day is both a moment of remembrance and a chance for our community to come together. Here in Southend, we will stand in silence at the Civic Centre and gather again at the Cenotaph in the evening to honour those who served in the Far East. Their courage and sacrifice are a reminder of the peace we cherish today and the stories we must pass on.”

Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Council, added: “As we mark 80 years since VJ Day, we remember not only the bravery of those who fought but also the quiet resilience of the families who waited at home. Southend is proud to honour their legacy as part of our local tradition of remembrance. I hope everyone in Southend will take a moment to reflect on their legacy and the freedoms their service secured for us.”
