Blues Looking To Get Back To Winning Ways

Southend United make the trip to Nottinghamshire tomorrow to take on Mansfield Town. This will be the 52nd meeting between the sides, since we first met back in 1931, when we drew 4-4. The reverse fixture in that season (1931/32) saw Southend beat Mansfield 5-2.
Last season, the home team won on both occasions. Blues won 3-0 at Roots Hall on, coincidentally, the 1st November last year, and Mansfield beat Blues 2-1 at Field Mill.
Both sides go into the game on the back of a draw. Blues drew 1-1 at home to Bury last week, while Mansfield drew 1-1 away at York City.

What Could Happen?

A win for Mansfield would put them level on points with Southend and could potentially lift them up from 17th to 9th. This will only happen if results go their way. A draw would lift them up to 13th, but again, only if results go their way.
A win for Southend could lift them from 9th to 7th, back into the play-offs. A draw could get them into the play-offs if results go their way.

For Travelling Blues Fans – Information Provided By The Opposition Contributor, Peter Wright

Where Can I Drink?

The supporters bar at the ground (Sandy Pate bar) is very popular and away fans are welcomed. Another pub that away fans go to is the Talbot on Nottingham Rd which is very close to fast food outlets like McDonald's & KFC.

Where Can I Park? –

Parking is a bit of an issue. Do not park in the retail park behind the away end, B&Q and the cinema car parks on Nottingham Road as you will get a ticket. The railway station car park, (pay & display) entrance behind Burger King & Frankie & Bennies is your best bet.

The Opposition View

Peter Wright

1. What is your name and how long have you supported Mansfield Town?

Peter Wright - First game in September 1960 when I was seven, but didn't start to go regularly until 1965 when I was 12 and could go to matches with secondary school mates instead of having parental supervision. Only missed about a dozen home games since then due to stuff like family weddings etc.. Can't understand why folk don't get married in June when the year has an odd number like I did.

2. What are your views on Mansfield’s season so far?

We are grinding out results due to us having an horrendous injury list. Drew last four games, three of them away from home.

3. Which player has impressed you most?

Rakish Bingham (forward) signed just before deadline day to replace Liam Hearn who is out until the new year injured.

4. Which player should Southend fans look out for?

I would have said Matt Rhead ( big centre forward) but it looks like he will be still injured. New loan signing Daniel Carr might cause you some problems.

5. Ryan Tafazolli had a short trial spell with Southend a few years back. What are your views on him?

Ryan is excellent and has come on leaps and bounds this season, unfortunately he is also injured.

6. What are your views on Southend United?

Always thought of as a 'third division/tier' side where we never do well when visiting Roots Hall. However I have seen us win there at Christmas about eight years ago.

7. Sam Clucas left Mansfield to join Chesterfield. Has his loss been a blow to the team?

I don't think Sam's loss has been a blow. I thought he was a bit too light-weight and thought his finishing should have been loads better. The cash received more important than Sam's loss.

8. You (Mansfield) drew 1-1 away at York City last week. What will need to change for you this week, if anything?

Can't see much personal change due to us have very few extra bodies that can come in. However defender Sutton now out for six weeks after sustaining a broken jaw in last Saturday's game and we hope that Riley can return after missing the York match through injury.

9. How do you think the game will pan out and what do you think the score will be?

Can see a very tight game with few goals. I hope it is us that gets the odd goal win.
