The 11+: What happens if your child doesn’t pass?

October 8, 2014 by Rick James

Just three weeks ago, hundreds of children across the borough sat their 11+ tests, and in just a matter of hours the results will be in. Many a parent will be on tenterhooks tonight as they wait for the results tomorrow morning.

In other towns across the country this wouldn’t be such a big deal, but for better or worse in Southend we are blessed with four of the best grammar schools in the UK, and many parents in the town feel their child will be given a fabulous advantage in life if only they can secure that place at the Westcliff or Southend Grammar schools.

There’s no doubt that all of these schools have excellent facilities, and the GCSE and A level results speak for themselves, but grammar schools set a standard that isn’t achievable for every child. Ask yourself… would your son or daughter be better off at the top of a decent comprehensive or struggling at the bottom of a grammar school?

We know as parents that if our child doesn’t pass we will undoubtedly be more upset than they will, so don’t let your disappointment affect your child’s confidence. Reassure them that you are glad they tried their very best, but genuinely (take a deep breath and repeat…genuinely) it really isn’t the end of the world! And come Saturday lunchtime, a trip to their favourite burger joint will probably make their world seem just that little bit better.

Remind them how well they did do, and when the dust settles next week, begin to call alternative schools, speak with admissions and start looking into the next phase of their education (and keep reminding them of all the positives - especially if their friends did pass).

Many of you are in for a sleepless night, but just remind yourself of that ‘Plan B’ you have put in place. If your child is meant to go to grammar school they will, and ultimately, it will always be about their happiness.

So, when you receive the email tomorrow (or the letter if you preferred) remember, the outcome will ultimately be the right one!

If your child took the 11+ test we at leigh-on-sea.com truly hope they get the pass they deserve.
