May 13, 2025

Westcliff High School for Girls which is part of South East Essex Academy Trust, is proud to announce an outstanding national achievement by the Class of 2023, who secured the highest average point score in the country for GCSE Engineering.

Following a full review of national data from the 2023 GCSE examination results, it was confirmed that WHSG students outperformed every other school in the UK offering the qualification – including other leading grammar schools, private and boarding schools. This marks the first time in the school’s history that a year group has earned such a prestigious distinction in Engineering at a national level.

Mr Bortone, Head of Engineering at WHSG said: “It’s an incredible result and well-earned. This group showed real determination, teamwork, and enthusiasm for the subject. I couldn’t be more proud.” Emma Matthews, Headteacher of Westcliff High School for Girls said “As an all-girls school, this achievement is not only a source of pride for the WHSG and SEEAT community, but also a powerful statement about the future of women in STEM. Congratulations once again to the Class of 2023 on this truly inspiring success.”
