£500 Bursary for Young Musicians

April 5, 2021

The Southend Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs are pleased to announce a new bursary for young musicians, which offers the chance for a young student to win £500.  The bursary, sponsored by the English Speaking Union, is open to any young musician aged up to 22 on the 30th April 2021.  Applicants must live or be receiving education in the local authority areas of Southend, Castle Point or Rochford, and must be currently continuing their musical studies at a recognised institution of high education.

Applicants will be required to submit a video of a solo musical performance, lasting between 5 – 8 minutes in length.  This bursary competition is open to musicians on any instruments, including voice.

The bursary will be adjudicated by conductor, composer, organist and choral director Adrian Lucas.  Adrian was himself a member of the Southend Boys’ Choir before continuing his studies as organ scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge.  His career has seen him holding positions at major cathedrals and festivals across the UK.  Adrian is Head of Choral Studies for the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), as well as being the musical director of its Millennium Youth Choir. He is a UK and international examiner for ABRSM and has been an external examiner for the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music.  He works regularly with the National Prep Schools Orchestra, as well as performing groups in Europe and the Americas.
