Are you the next Alan Sugar? Appeal for young entrepreneurs ahead of Southend’s first Youth Market

Friday 9 October 2015

Budding entrepreneurs have the opportunity to try their hand at running their own business as part of the town’s inaugural Youth Market.

Southend Youth Market is open to 16-19-year-olds who live in the Borough and will encourage young people to run a stall for the day on Elmer Approach in the town centre for just £10.

Business experts will support the participants and award a cash prize to the best stall, with the stallholder taking the title of Southend Youth Trader 2015. All participants will also keep any profits they make on the stall during the day.

There are 10 stalls available for young people on the day, with stalls being allocated via a competitive application process. Young traders have until Friday 23 October to apply and will need to be available to run their stall on Saturday 21 November.

Cllr Graham Longley, Executive Member for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, said: “Youth markets are a great way of showing young people how to start up and run their own retail business with no risk to themselves.

“They provide a rare opportunity for young entrepreneurs to come together and trade in their local town and learn the ins and outs of business from fellow traders.

“The market will also help to encourage young people and the local community to shop on the market, attracting a wider audience into the town centre and current markets.”
