Competition: Win a family ticket to Village Green 2019

Competition: Win a family ticket to Village Green 2019 - 2 adults and up to 4 children - Saturday 13th July
2019 sees Village Green return to Chalkwell Park for its tenth edition and it's bigger and better than ever with 14 stages and 14 other areas of fun and entertainment. Over the years, Village Green has grown from a small-scale event in 2008 attracting 8,000 people to a must-attend festival drawing more than 20,000. Run by arts organisation Metal, the not-for-profit, family-centred arts festival offers a diverse and eclectic day of performance, activities, marketplaces and food. A lively and exciting mix of local, national and international acts take part offering audiences an unrivalled array of theatre, spoken word, poetry, dance, outdoor arts, musical theatre, DJs, visual arts, music, workshops and children’s activities, all set in the beautiful Chalkwell Park. Everyone from infants to adults, teenagers to third agers can find something new and exciting to see or do.
Headlining the festival this year are Busted and Fun Lovin' Criminals. With prominent local bands performing on Southend music collective SoSlam’s Busking Stage, the Oak Stage programmed and run by young people to showcase young performers and Idea 13 stage celebrating the regional music industry, music lovers are spoilt for choice. Favourite stages return such as Global Village offering entertainment from around the world and new areas, such as The Space In-Between exploring mental health and wellbeing, and the Grrrl Zine Fair celebrating DIY creativity, make first time appearances.
Southend theatre company, N-Act recreates the much-loved Chalkwell Beach Theatre from the 1950s and has invited local people to get involved. Southend born sculptor Johnny Kipps has gathered artists for the Artist Village to create artworks for the festival. Artist Nik Ramage has worked with Southend residents to create a moving sculpture from scrap bicycles to be part of the ForwardMotion stage, with performances from Team Extreme, professional skateboarders, BMXers and pop-up cycling track.
Chalkwell Hall hosts an exhibition of Decca Records, the iconic label celebrating its 90th anniversary. This is the only venue to host the exhibition outside London. The Jazz Centre UK’s Jazz Cafe in Chalkwell Park Rooms offers live music by regional, national and international jazz stars.
