Consultation launched on school admission arrangements for 2022/23

November 11, 2020

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is consulting on proposed admission arrangements for community schools in the Borough for the school year 2022/23.

The consultation was launched on Monday 2 November and closes at 5pm on Friday 11 December. It involves the following schools:

  • Barons Court Primary School
  • Chalkwell Hall Infant School
  • Chalkwell Hall Junior School
  • Earls Hall Primary School
  • Edwards Hall Primary School
  • Fairways Primary School
  • Heycroft Primary School
  • Leigh North Street Primary School
  • West Leigh Infant School

The council is asking local parents, carers, school-based staff and members of the community to have their say on the proposed admission arrangements. These arrangements would take effect from September 2022 onwards.

The consultation focuses on the school year 2022/23 and is looking for comments regarding:

  • reducing the admission limit for Chalkwell Hall Infant School
  • changing the priority order for Heycroft Primary School
  • keeping the current admission arrangements for Barons Court Primary School and Nursery, Chalkwell Hall Junior School, Earls Hall Primary School, Edwards Hall Primary School, Fairways Primary School, Leigh North Street Primary School and West Leigh Infant School
  • In line with the School Admissions Code 2014 there is a legal requirement to consult when there are proposed changes to admission arrangements. Admission arrangements for community schools are reviewed by the council every year.

People can respond to the consultation online or request a paper version of the survey. The consultation can be found online on the Your say Southend engagement platform (www.southend.gov.uk/admissionsconsultation). The platform also includes a guidance document explaining the proposals within the consultation.

This consultation is separate to the council’s consultation on the potential amalgamation of Chalkwell Hall Infants School and Chalkwell Hall Junior School, which is still running and is due to close on Friday 13 November.

Cllr Anne Jones, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “We want as many members of the community to have their say as possible. We particularly want to hear the views of parents and carers who have children attending Chalkwell Hall Infant School or Heycroft Primary School or who are considering applying to send their children to these schools.

“The council will consider all comments returned during the consultation period and will respond to any questions in a consultation summary, which will be published on the council’s website after the consultation closes. Following the consultation, the proposed arrangements will be presented to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Cabinet for determination. The admission arrangements for all schools will be published on the council’s website by 15 March 2021.”

Respondents wanting to discuss the content of the consultation or to request a paper version of the survey should contact the council’s admissions team by email admissionsconsultation@southend.gov.uk or by calling 01702 212934.
