Councillor praises Southend students for GCSE successes

Friday 21st August 2015

A Southend-on-Sea Borough Councillor has praised GCSE students across the Borough for an impressive set of GCSE results.

This year in Southend 64% of students in the Borough achieved 5 A*-C including English and maths. This is a continuing three-year trend of improvement and a 2% increase on last year’s results.

In English there was a 2% increase on last year with 73% of students attaining A*-C. In Maths the improvement was even greater with 74% of students achieving A*-C, a 3% increase on last year.

Overall, 99.2% of Southend students achieved at least one GCSE which is an improvement on last year and above the national figure.

Cllr Anne Jones, Executive Member for Children & Learning, said: “Students and teachers across the Borough should hold their heads high for an impressive set of exam results. They will have been hard fought and hard won.

“It’s very pleasing to see progress being made, particularly in maths and English, which continue to be the core subjects looked at by employers when recruiting.

“We cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal when it comes to our children’s education. There are still clearly improvements that can be made - ways we as an authority can better support our schools and their students to aim higher and give our students the best possible foundations for their accession into adulthood. But parents can rest assured that this is a challenge we will answer with determination and resolve.

“I now hope that students can enjoy the rest of their summer holidays and look forward to a new chapter in their lives, whether that is in further education, vocational training or employment.”
