Southend-on-Sea Borough Council celebrates 125 years since the incorporation of the Borough tomorrow (Tuesday 19 September).

The Council will be marking this event by raising a special 125 flag outside the Civic Centre at 10am, in the company of the Council Leader, Cllr John Lamb and other dignitaries, including the Deputy Mayor of Southend, Cllr Derek Jarvis who will make a speech.

Celebratory events have been taking place across the Borough during the year, with various activities and events for residents and visitors to get involved in and help celebrate Southend’s 125 years.

Some of the standout events include the Southend Film Festival, Priory Park Flower Festival, the ongoing Silk River project, which comes to Southend on Sunday 24th September and of course, the poignant installation of Poppies: Wave at Barge Pier, Shoeburyness.

Cllr John Lamb, Leader of the Council, said: “On this significant year in our Borough’s history, we have ensured we have marked it accordingly by involving our local community in many events and programmes.

“On this special day, it is worth reflecting how our Borough is bursting with history and culture and is such a vibrant, but also nostalgic and historic place to be. Visitors come from all over to enjoy a day at the seaside and all that we have to offer and that has been true for much of our recent history.

“As we look back, it is also important to look forward and acknowledge the opportunities and exciting future that we have. The Borough continues to grow and is becoming more popular than ever for people to live, visit, work and invest in. As we do that we are conscious also that we do not change the feeling of Southend-on-Sea being a unique and truly one-of-a-kind town.”
