Legal Eagle Q & A: When to give notice when leaving a rented property

March 11, 2019 by Melinda @ Giles Wilson Solicitors

Question: My boyfriend and I have just had an offer accepted for our first flat!  Should we give in our notice on our rented property? We have to give 2 months notice and don’t want to pay rent at the same time as the mortgage? We have no idea how long it will all take.

Answer: Warning! Don’t give in your notice yet!  Wait until the actual conveyancing process starts and speak to your solicitor about timings.  Worse than paying for rent and mortgage payments at the same time (that can hopefully be avoided) is to be homeless!
