Leigh-on-sea for Town of Culture - Survey Deadline 11th March
Three towns in Essex are vying for a slice of history — and a share of £3 million — as they bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028.
Witham, Rochford and Leigh-on-Sea have all officially entered the race for the prestigious title, which organisers hope will shine a spotlight on local creativity, heritage and community spirit across the United Kingdom.
The winning town will receive approximately £3 million to invest in cultural development, while the two runners-up will each be awarded £250,000. The funding can be channelled into festivals, community events, public art installations, youth programmes and a wide range of other creative and cultural initiatives designed to leave a lasting legacy.
Local leaders say the competition is about far more than prize money. At its heart, the Town of Culture programme aims to celebrate what makes each community unique while identifying opportunities to strengthen and expand cultural life for residents of all ages.
An essential part of the bidding process is public engagement. Residents are being encouraged to share their views on what their town already offers culturally — and what could make it even better. From ideas for new music and food festivals to expanding arts workshops, theatre performances and heritage trails, community input will play a central role in shaping each bid.
There have already been a number of creative and ambitious suggestions put forward, reflecting the strong appetite for cultural growth across the three towns. Organisers are keen to hear even more ideas before the consultation deadline on March 11.
Residents can take part by completing the official survey, titled Leigh-on-Sea for Town of Culture 2028 – Initial Public Consultation. Community members are urged to follow the link provided and make sure their voices are heard. https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage
With the potential to transform local arts, boost tourism and strengthen civic pride, the 2028 Town of Culture title represents a significant opportunity — and now, it is up to the people of Witham, Rochford and Leigh-on-Sea to help shape the future of their towns.
