Leigh-on-Sea skatepark reopens following "radical" refurbishment

October 21, 2026

Leigh-on-Sea’s skatepark has reopened following refurbishment work, restoring a popular community space with deep roots in the town’s skateboarding scene.

The park has evolved over several decades, with its latest transformation bringing together local support, the council, community fundraising, a local skate shop owner and skatepark specialists Betongpark.

The redevelopment was designed to breathe new life into the ageing facility while preserving its character and creating a space suitable for everyone, from beginners taking their first steps on a skateboard to experienced riders looking for a challenge.

The project was completed in two stages. The first involved a major extension, combining street-style obstacles and flowing transitions to create a hybrid plaza. Rather than removing all the existing structures, the team incorporated elements of the old park into the new design, repurposing a former vert wall into a fast quarter-pipe with pool-style coping and integrating new bank features into the existing layout.

The second phase saw the original bowl completely rebuilt. The worn and deteriorating structure was transformed into a faster, more responsive pool-style bowl, constructed within the shell of the original.

Together, the plaza and bowl offer a range of features designed to help riders develop their skills, with more forgiving areas for newcomers alongside demanding terrain for experienced skateboarders.

Alongside the skatepark, a container café and first aid point were introduced when the redeveloped site reopened in 2020. Operated by members of the local skate community, the facility offers refreshments, retail, skateboard hire, lessons and events, helping to make the park a wider community hub.

The provision of first aid equipment on site also forms part of the park’s approach to safety.

At the heart of the redevelopment was a vision to create a welcoming space for the whole community, particularly young people, offering somewhere to learn new skills, stay active and build connections through skateboarding.

Lessons and community events continue to support that aim, helping to ensure the park remains a place where riders of all ages and abilities can come together.
