My Leigh-on-Sea - Liam Jefferies
What’s your name, where do you live and what do you do?
My name is Liam Jefferies, I live on Leigh Road and I’m a writer.
Old Leigh or The Broadway?
Definitely Old Town, it’s so picturesque - particularly out of season. I like walking the path from Chalkwell Station and counting all the dogs, plus the pubs are all within stumbling range of each other.
Where do you like to eat in Leigh?
I love Milly’s Deli on Leigh Road, it’s a nice family run place that has an old r&b/soul radio programme recording on the speakers and a mixed greens to die for. When not there you can find me at Henry Burgers, especially on Wednesdays when Buffalo wings are £1 each. I also like Ten Green Bottles in Rectory Grove for a spot of live music or a fish finger sandwich at lunch.
Where do you like to drink in Leigh?
That depends, for the hard stuff I prefer The Broker, it’s a real ale pub with none of the frou frou - which I’m not entirely opposed to, but for that I pop into Vino Vero.
For anything non-booze and I like to sit in Anke’s on London Road; beautiful homemade cakes, comfy leather sofas, and 1940’s jazz played at just the right volume to be Kindle-friendly. I know that’s technically Westcliff but Anke herself is so very lovely I’d be remiss not to include her lounge.
What shops do you visit in Leigh?
I’ve had my hair cut at The HeartBreak Club for the past three years, owner Wez is a silly sausage but sure knows his way around a short back and sides.
A vintage shop has recently opened on Elm Road, Latham Street vintage has an offer on at present; your first item is a tenner and every subsequent purchase is £5 - I recently picked up a 1980’s Aquascutum trench coat and some Italian sportswear for an absolute steal.
For everything else I shop in Boni-Vee Hardware, they’ve recently started stocking some great plants, my girlfriend is somewhat of a plant hoarder, and usually picks up one from there every week or so.
