LOCAL TRAVEL AGENT REPORTS HOLIDAY BOOKINGS ARE BOOMING

Leigh based travel agent, Karen Goldman, has reported record holiday bookings this January as more people than ever plan their next trip away, making the most of the favourable euro exchange rate and escaping the UK’s cold and unpredictable weather.

Karen, who runs her own home-based travel business as part of the UK’s leading independent travel company Travel Counsellors, also believes this boost in bookings is down to customers valuing the personal service she can provide. As a result the company celebrated its best ever sales in the company’s 20 year history and recorded its highest ever selling day on Friday 16th January. Bookings for January were up 7% compared to the previous year and the company achieved seven out of ten of their top ten best sales days ever.

ON BINGEWATCHING

Last week I had an email come through on my phone and I'm not going to lie, it made me squeal with excitement. Netflix had emailed me saying, basically, Ray, clear your diary for House of Cards. The whole series - yes, the WHOLE SERIES - was being loaded onto the system on Friday. I could barely contain myself. Thirteen sweet hours of political drama, double crossing, and Kevin Spacey talking threateningly into the camera.

It also stresses me out slightly, in one of the worst-offending 'first world problems' of them all - you already have a box-set on the go when another one is released. I'm currently making my way through Twin Peaks for the first time (I know, I know, where have I been etc) - but it's just going to have to go head to head with House of Cards. House of Cards is always put on Netflix in its entirety, so I can just slay my way through the whole thing. But when Twin Peaks was first broadcast, people had to actually wait a week to find out what happened next. I've had it lucky - I have it on DVD, so I can treat myself to the next episode immediately to find out if Leo catches Bobby and Shelly at it (also known as the Riskiest Affair Of All Time).

SOUTHEND UNITED V WYCOMBE WANDERERS PREVIEW

It’s a case of 6th against 3rd at Roots Hall on Saturday, as Wycombe Wanderers visit South Essex knowing a win could potentially put them back on the top of the league if other results go their way. Southend on the other hand will be hoping to build on their most recent result and keep the pace on the top three teams.

Southend go into this one on the back of a 0-0 draw away at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday. As far as I can tell, Blues scored in the game but according to the officials, the ball hadn’t crossed the line. Wycombe go into the game on the back of a 2-1 win away at Tranmere Rovers. They finished the game with ten men after striker Matt McClure was sent off 70 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the Tuesday night. They (Wycombe) are appealing against the red card but the final decision may not arrive before Saturday’s game.
