Popular park receives a litter blitz

Tuesday 23rd August 2016

Project 49 – an award-winning project promoting inclusion of adults with learning disabilities in the Borough – is the latest organisation to help Make Southend Sparkle.

Members of the group gave up two hours of their free time to blitz litter in Blenheim Park on Friday (16 August 2016).

The litter pick was organised as part of Make Southend Sparkle – a new initiative by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, which aims to help local residents, community groups and business get involved in making the Borough an attractive place to live, work and visit.

Cllr Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism & The Economy, said: “Project 49 does some truly fantastic work in our community, providing innovative services for adults with learning disabilities.

“Their services users have already done so much to help make our town green and attractive – such as helping to plant the Mendip Crescent Wildlife Garden and the award winning City Allotment project at The Railway Hotel – so I’m thrilled to see them making a difference in this much loved park. My hope is that other groups will now follow their example and volunteer to make Southend truly sparkle.

Cheryl Oksuz, Co-ordinator of Community Inclusion for Project 49, said: “This was a great opportunity for the people we work with to give something back to the community, and to demonstrate how valuable their contribution is. This was also a chance for us to show how passionate we are about the borough and how invested we are in making it as attractive and enjoyable as possible for us and others.”
