Southend retains purple flag for the 10th year running

February 8, 2023

The nightlife of Southend-on-Sea has once again been given the thumbs up as it retains the purple flag for the tenth year in a row.

The prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE), which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm to 5am.

Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

The submission was lead by Southend-on-Sea City Council but multiple partners contributed to the success.

Highlights from Southend-on-Sea’s submission include exemplary partnership with an overall commitment and understanding to why Purple Flag and the night time economy are of benefit to the City, a huge choice of pub and bar venues catering to all choices, and measures to raise spiking awareness.

Cllr Martin Terry, cabinet member for public protection, said: “I am thrilled that once again Southend-on-Sea has secured this prestigious title. Our teams work closely with partners to ensure visitors and residents have fun in our City, but stay safe in the process.

“There are several different processes and procedures to have in place in order to meet the criteria for the award, and once again we have achieved it. And not only are we reaccredited, it is for the tenth year running, which is an amazing achievement. Thank you to all the partners whose collaboration has made this possible for our great City.”
