Why you should understand m-Commerce

August 16, 2015 by Andy @ Chorus Business Advisers

Another new buzzword is being bantered around in business circles, m-Commerce. For those people just getting their heads round e-Commerce, it may seem just another trendy phrase, but this really is the way forward.

So what is m-Commerce? It stands for Mobile Commerce and is the ability to purchase goods or services using a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.

Driven by smartphone penetration and access to 4G, mobile internet usage has increased exponentially in the last few years according recent research.

Amazing over 80% of people now access the internet through a mobile phone, a vast increase from just 24 per cent in 2010.

At the same time, 76 per cent of all adults in the UK made a purchase online in 2015, up from just 53 per cent five years ago, changing the way we shop for good.

Whilst personal internet access has transformed many aspects of our lives, perhaps the biggest is how we browse and purchase goods and services.  The vast majority of the population now shops online, with over 12 per cent of all retail sales coming through e-Commerce in June 2015.

Despite these figures, a surprising number of businesses have still not adapted their strategies to match consumer demand. People have become accustomed to the ability to browse and buy on a whim, and time is running out quickly for those companies without a comprehensive mobile strategy.

It’s now not enough to simply provide a website. Businesses must seek out new ways to attract and engage their customers through mobile devices wherever they are sitting on a train, or browsing online at home.  Mobile engagement also unites online and physical sales, creating a single seamless experience to match consumer expectations.
