First phase of works completed at Belton Way East

August 19, 2020

A popular route used daily by hundreds of people travelling to and from Leigh-on-Sea Station has had its footpath resurfaced as part of wider slope and stability works to improve the route for residents, commuters and visitors.

The works, which were carried out by the council’s highways contractor Marlborough Highways, were completed at the end of July and saw 90% of the northern footpath resurfaced at Belton Way East. Gabion baskets have also been installed as part of the wider slope and stability works in the area.

Further plans are in the pipeline to complete the works next year. This will include more stabilising and footpath works to the southern slope, which will be completed once further investigation into the final designs needed for the slope works has taken place.

Cllr Ron Woodley, cabinet member for transport, capital and inward investment, said: “I am pleased to see this phase of the works completed on such a pivotal commuter and visitor route to and from Leigh-on-Sea train station. The resurfaced footpath is much smoother and will reduce the risk of any trips and falls on what is a busy walkway.

“We needed to complete this phase before commencing the second phase as commuters and residents will need space to walk whilst the southern side is completed. The gabion baskets complete a tidy finish, and I am delighted with how the first phase has come out.

“We will be announcing further works in the coming weeks regarding the second phase of works, which will see works to the southern slope footpath.”
