New CCTV for Balmoral Tower Blocks

January 24, 2017 by Southend Borough Council

New CCTV cameras are being installed at the three Balmoral estate tower blocks located in Westcliff-on-Sea.

Five cameras are being installed in each of the ground floor and basement entrances, in a bid to provide some reassurance to local residents and help provide additional protection to the block entrance areas. Grampian will also have an additional car park camera.

The work is being carried out by Blake Electrical Contractors and managed by South Essex Homes. The work at Grampian and Brecon has started and will be followed by Blackdown. All CCTV will be operational by the end of January.

Cllr Mark Flewitt, Executive Councillor for Housing, said: “We are all very aware of the May 2016 fire that tragically took the life of Khabi Aubrey and her unborn child. Since that day, officers from South Essex Homes and I have met with many of her friends and family and agreed that we would look at improved security measures at the block entrances.

“I am pleased that South Essex Homes are able to fund this work, which will create an important deterrent and improve the security of this area.”

Mario Ambrose, Executive Director for South Essex Homes, said: “Part of the new CCTV system at Grampian includes a new camera covering the car park. This will provide coverage of this area and catch any anti-social behaviour and flytipping being undertaken.

“Alongside this, every entry into the blocks will be recorded by a camera, which we hope will reassure residents.”
