Restaurant Review: NY Hot Dogs!

October 1, 2014 by Rick James

There’s a fantastic surge of authentic American inspired cuisine ripping through Leigh and Southend at the moment all with large portion, calories-be-damned, ManVsFood vibe. And NY Hot Dogs, who’ve been opened just a few months, are certainly at the top of this trend.

Set opposite Southend pier, the premise is simple. Select your type of sausage (Classic American Frank, All-Beef Frank, Bratwurst, or good old Cumberland), and then choose a style to suit your taste. Perhaps a ‘Top Dog’ with smoked streaky bacon and onions, or the ‘Reservoir Dog’ smothered in BBQ sauce, cheese and bacon. There’s 6 tasty styles in total, and all come wrapped in a good quality bread bun.

If hot dogs aren’t your thing, there’s a range of alternatives including a sensational Pulled Pork Roll (covered in BBQ sauce and coleslaw), 100% Brisket Beef Burger (apparently minced in house daily) and even a Fish Po’ Boy or a Cajun Chickpea Veggie Burger if that’s your thing. But, to be honest being a vegetarian at NY Hot Dogs is slightly missing the point.

The joy of seeing a massive hot dog, topped with a spicy chilli, or a well-endowed pulled pork roll, oozing tangy BBQ sauce is where NY Hot Dogs is at it’s strongest. And if you go the whole hog and order yourself some Brisket Chilli Fries then (Fries, topped with Chilli and melted cheese - insane) then like my family, you’re an extremely happy bunch.

Be warned: these gourmet hot dogs are not for those counting their calories. Each sausage is a generous size and it’s piled high with cheese, bacon or whatever else you opted for. It’s the sort of food where you pat your tummy afterwards contentedly.

Kids are well catered for too, my son tucked into a Kids Hot Dog, where my 10 year old daughter (stick thin, but eats like a horse) nearly completed the Top Dog single handed and still polished off a few Sweet Potato fries too. And as each dog is a shade under a fiver, the family is well fed for a decent price.

There isn’t a dessert menu as such, but the Milkshakes (all made to order and featuring additional extras such as M&M’s, Skittles or even their home-made peanut butter, are far superior to any high-street chain.

NY Hot Dogs is seriously good, no-nonsense comfort food, with a realistic price. Oh, and they deliver too!
