Tree-Cycling Collection raises more than £5K

Havens Hospices has been turning trees into care after collecting more than 500 real Christmas trees from doorsteps to help raise vital funds for the charity.

The collection service picked up Christmas trees from households across Leigh-on-Sea, Castle Point, Rayleigh and Hockley in return for a donation to the hospice charity, which cares for babies, children and adults. Its specialist Care Team looks after the whole family throughout illness, death and bereavement, putting wellbeing at the centre of their support.

This was only possible thanks to the 32 volunteers and 14 local businesses who gave up their time and vehicles to travel hundreds of miles across South-East Essex.

This year’s collections were kindly sponsored by local insulation company Saving Energy and all the trees collected have now been turned into wood chippings by Essex Tree Services for free to be reused elsewhere.

Jane Hopkins, Community Engagement Manager at Havens Hospices, said: “This is the third year we have run our Christmas Tree Collection Service and each year sees more real trees recycled to help raise vital funds for our care. The £5,000 raised will make a huge difference to local families needing hospice care, whenever they need us most.

“We hope to expand our service next year to even more households across the area. It’s an easy and convenient way for people to support their local community at Christmas time. We don’t charge a penny for our care and that’s only possible thanks to fundraisers like this and the incredible support from our local communities, making donations and volunteering their time.
